Pharmacotherapy in Obesity Management

This multi-module, self-paced learning program informs participants of the most recent updates to Obesity Canada’s adult pharmacotherapy clinical practice guideline. Designed to bridge evidence and practice, the program equips clinicians with practical, guideline-based strategies to integrate into everyday patient care.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the mechanisms of action, indications, efficacy, and safety profiles of pharmacologic agents approved for obesity management in Canada.
  • Interpret new Obesity Canada pharmacotherapy guideline recommendations and supporting evidence.
  • Apply evidence-based clinical decision-making to initiate and adjust obesity pharmacotherapy based on individual patient profiles, comorbidities, and treatment goals.
  • Evaluate treatment outcomes and adjust care plans based on clinical, metabolic, and functional responses to pharmacotherapy.

Who it’s for

This course is designed for a comprehensive range of healthcare professionals, encompassing Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Pharmacists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Respiratory Therapists, Psychologists, and other allied health professionals. It aims to equip these professionals with specialized knowledge and skills relevant to their respective fields. By engaging various healthcare roles, the course ensures a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, enhancing collaborative practices and improving health outcomes.

Structure and time investment

Sixteen asynchronous modules and an evaluation form are included. It will take approximately four hours to complete the course.

Credits for Family Medicine Specialists: This Certified Activity meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the Queen’s University CPD Team for up to 4 Mainpro+ credits.

Credits for Royal College Specialists: This co-developed activity is an Accredited Section 3- Self-Assessment Program as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved and co-developed by the Queen’s University CPD Team. You may claim a maximum of 4 hours (credits are automatically calculated). 

Hours for All Health Professionals: This is a professional learning activity which provided up to 4 hours of Continuing Education.
