Welcome to Obesity Fundamentals

Welcome to Obesity Fundamentals—a foundational, self-paced learning experience designed to shift how we understand and engage with obesity as a complex, chronic disease. Whether you’re part of Amgen’s leadership team, a Medical Science Liaison, or clinical trial staff, this course will deepen your understanding of the science, systems, and lived experiences that shape obesity and its management today.
Developed in alignment with the Canadian Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and the Canadian Obesity Education Competencies (COECs), this course blends leading-edge science, person-centered care principles, and the voices of those with lived experience to equip you with the knowledge and empathy to support change in your role.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Explain obesity as a complex, chronic, relapsing disease that requires long-term management.
- Identify key physiological, behavioural, and environmental drivers of obesity.
- Understand non-stigmatizing, person-centered frameworks to assess and manage obesity using tools such as the 5As and the Edmonton Obesity Staging System.
- Describe evidence-based interventions including behavioural, pharmacological, and surgical options.
- Explore intersections between obesity and other chronic diseases.
- Reflect on personal and systemic weight bias & stigma, and identify strategies to foster equity-based, stigma-free care.
This program includes:
- 7 core learning modules, plus this introduction and supplementary resources & tools.
- Short videos, readings, interactive activities, and reflective journals
- A pre- and post-course knowledge check to track your learning • Opportunities to listen to real stories from people living with obesity
This course brings together a multidisciplinary team of leading clinicians, educators, researchers, and advocates from across Canada.
